What rain doesn t show up on radar? ›

Rain Intensity and Droplet Size: Light rainfall or drizzle consists of tiny water droplets. These droplets might be too small for the radar to detect effectively. Since low-level moisture can lead to the formation of such fine droplets, the rain might be falling right under our noses but stay invisible to the radar.

Subrefraction causes the radar to overshoot objects that would normally be detected. Distant thunderstorms might not be detected with subrefraction as well as under reporting the intensity as the beam hits only the top portion of the thunderstorm cloud.

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

Colors of doppler radar means : Red= Very Heavy Rain or Rain & Hail. Purple= Extremely heavy rain or hail.

Blue and green colors represent light-to-moderate rainfall. Yellow and orange colors show moderate-to-heavy precipitation, while red is very heavy rainfall and pink colors inside the red color represent hail of different sizes.

In addition, the radar image will not show echos from precipitation that lies outside the radar's beam, either because the precipitation is too high above the radar, or because it is so close to the Earth's surface that it lies beneath the radar's beam.

The complexity of weather forecasting and the large amounts of data that must be collected and processed means there will always be some errors along the way. Quality and Quantity of Data: The quality of the weather instruments used affects the accuracy of the data.

This is called virga. Our radars scan the atmosphere at various heights, so they are able to detect moisture in the clouds and the potential for rain to be falling. Oftentimes, the water droplets evaporate at too low of a level for the radar to pick up.

LiDAR has higher resolution and can provide more detailed and accurate measurements than radar.

This is called "virga." As the water droplet falls through dry air and evaporates, it leaves streaks. Virga is also appropriately referred to as "fallstreaks" and "precipitation trails." As the precipitation falls through the dry column of air and evaporates, it cools the air around it.

Based on our observations, rain can cause false readings or interfere with the radar's ability to determine a vehicle's speed. Despite these challenges, radar devices are still used in rainy conditions, although officers may rely more on visual cues and other forms of speed measurement.
