Rasial, the First Necromancer (70)

Rasial, the First Necromancer is a solo-only boss and the titular main antagonist of The First Necromancer quest series. He is the first Necromancer in the history of Gielinor, wishing to end all life and break the cycle of death. He resides in a citadel floating above the City of Um in the Underworld. His lieutenant is Hermod, the Spirit of War.

Like Hermod, Rasial can only be damaged with necromancy, though he is not immune to alternate damage such as reflected damage and some typeless damage, such as a blood reaver's passive effect.

He is first fought during the quest Alpha vs Omega in story mode with halved life points and reduced damage output. After the quest, the players get access to the regular boss encounter; as such, players must also have levels 95 Necromancy, 77 Dungeoneering, 86 Archaeology, 66 Magic, and 40 Prayer which are required to progress through the quest series. The quest encounter increases the player's kill count to 1, so defeating him again in a normal encounter is not required for Reaper Crew.

Rasial, the First Necromancer is the only monster that drops tier 95 Necromancy equipment as a reward.

Obtaining all unique drops from this encounter completes the achievement Stranger Things, unlocking the title [Name], the Lich King / Queen.

Gaining Necromancy levels in City of Um, including the troll cave, causes one of various Rasial's voiced lines to appear for the player.

Using the teleport option in Rasial, the First Necromancer's entry in the Beasts tab teleports the player to the City of Um lodestone.

Additional drops[edit | edit source]

There are three rolls made on this table simultaneously; one for the weapons, another for the robes, and a last one for the pet unlock item. Therefore, it is possible, although rare, to get two unique pieces of First Necromancer's equipment from one kill. The chance to hit the weapon table is 1/320, improved to 1/316 with tier 4 luck. The chance to hit the armour table is 1/128, improved to 1/126 with tier 4 luck.[1] Therefore, the chance to hit either the weapon or armour table is ~1/92, improved to ~1/91 with tier 4 luck. The listed drop rates are the chances to get each individual piece.

History[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

The Underworld is no longer enough for me, my old friend. The souls of this city languished in self-indulgence, slowly fading into nothingness. I have given them purpose. I will forge them into an army, and wage war upon the mortal world. Those who perish will also serve me, until the dead outnumber the living. When I am done, there will be no more need for death.
— Rasial, the First Necromancer Necromancy!

Rasial was originally a mortal Guthixian druid named Misalionar[2]. Like Harold, who would eventually become Death, Rasial was one of the earliest human settlers on Gielinor and was a follower of Guthix[3]. Death refers to Rasial in life as a student and a teacher, with a deep curiosity. Guthix would end up noticing Rasial and appointed him as a Guardian, tasking him to protect the Runecrafting altars[4]. He was also described by Duke Orcus as a guardian of magic and runes[5]. Unlike Death, who was the first person to naturally die on the planet, Rasial was the first to be murdered, with his murderer managing to evade justice.[6] At some point, Rasial became the first person on Gielinor to learn necromancy, an ability that he seemingly used to bring himself back from death. Since then, he has reappeared many times throughout history, staying in the background of important events and guiding a number of apprentices which then, like him, mysteriously vanished. Some of his apprentices were Duke Orcus, Necrovarus and Yudura, who he would use to strike out into the real world rather than doing so himself.

After Rasial's mortal body expired, Orcus tasked the Heriditas Expedition to seek out his tomb[7], so he could consume his body for knowledge, but Rasial greeted the demon as a fellow necromancer and convinced him otherwise. In return for teaching him more about necromancy, Orcus taught Rasial about the primordial elements and Erebus, which made him feel betrayed and untrusted by Guthix for withholding this knowledge from him, resulting in him straying from his path. After learning all he could from Orcus, he obliterated the demon.

At some point after learning about Erebus, Rasial created the Necromantic Rune Temple[8] using necromantic elements taken from the realm, which allowed him to create runes to power the spells used by necromancers to this day.

When Rasial learned of Necrovarus, he greeted him as a necromancer and told him about the ectoplasm underneath Port Phasmatys, taking on Necrovarus as an apprentice. Necrovarus created the Ectofuntus as his vessel, but to his apparent shock, discovered that it was draining his own life rather than supplementing it. Rasial did not heed his calls for help, likely realising that he was not worth his time anymore and instead improved on the flaws of the Ectofuntus for his own vessel.

Rasial also met with Yudura and took him in as another apprentice, but he soon became irritated by the necromancer's arrogance and short-sightedness, likening his cabal to be a pathetic group of followers with nothing interesting to learn. He did not intervene when Moia struck Yudura down, causing Yudura to resent him for letting Moia cut him down in his prime.

Rasial thought that the Mahjarrat, including Zemouregal, were of little use to him.[9] Despite this, it is implied that he kept Zemouregal in check, seeing how the Mahjarrat coveted his power[10] and considered him to be an obstacle in his plans.[11]

Enacting his plan[edit | edit source]

Following the establishing of the new Edicts of Guthix in the Sixth Age, which saw the gods leaving Gielinor, Rasial made his move on the Well of Souls in the City of Um. He siphoned and enthralled all souls from the well, turning them into an army of spirits meant to wage war against the life in the surface world. His goal was to end the cycle of death itself, which meant the end of all life on Gielinor. He enlisted Hermod, the Spirit of War, a phantom brought to life by the unending conflict in the Third Age, to be his bodyguard by convincing him that breaking the cycle of death was the only way to stop wars from being fought. Hermod protected Rasial's Citadel, floating above the city.

During the Sixth Age, Rasial observed the adventurer, telepathically communicating with them as they performed various activities on Gielinor.

The following takes place during Necromancy!.

Soon after this, when they explored a white portal near the portals between Death's office and War's Retreat, Rasial spotted the World Guardian and ordered Angurvadal to kill them. The adventurer appeared before Death, who told them about the incident. Death, realising what was going on, immediately told them to travel with him to Um, where they encountered Rasial and Hermod. Rasial declared his intent to wage war against the living and enslave the dead, declaring that the adventurer would be his last apprentice. Death exclaimed that he would put everyone in eternal servitude and stated that his plans would be stopped, but Rasial reminded him that only a trained necromancer could defeat him, forcing Death to help them learn the ways of necromancy. Rasial then left with Hermod to make preparations for his invasion, telling the adventurer to confront him after they had become stronger. The adventurer, not wanting to stoop to the same level as other necromancers, decided to be a "good" necromancer.

The following takes place during Vessel of the Harbinger.

After Necrovarus helped strengthen the Well of Souls upon learning that the adventurer was Rasial's latest apprentice, Rasial teleported in. Rasial was upset with Necrovarus' assistance and threatened to take the paltry remains of his power out of spite should he continue helping them, as the adventurer was under his tutelage. Upon dispelling him, Rasial told them that Necrovarus was a failure and that his power was nothing compared to his before teleporting away.

The following takes place during The Spirit of War.

Believing themselves to be ready, the adventurer hitched a ride to Rasial's floating citadel with the help of Kharen. Rasial was disappointed in their early arrival, stating that they had come too late for him to raise his army and too early to be confronting him. He ordered Hermod to remove them, but they were able to defeat him without much issue, though the spirit simply reformed upon defeat. Rasial was somewhat impressed, but told them that they had barely scratched the surface - their fighting was unrefined and that Harold had kept them in the dark; they had not studied the history of necromancy from Duke Orcus' works or learned new and current methods from the Necrolords of Daemonheim. However, as a reward for defeating Hermod, Rasial told them that he would no longer bother the city for the time being before dismissing them, telling them not to come back until they were properly prepared.

The following takes place during Remains of the Necrolord.

Upon being sent to Yudura for more information about Rasial, Yudura convinced the adventurer to help him by first restoring his body, which they did into an edimmu form. Yudura, angered that Rasial had taken a new apprentice over him (notably one with a conscience), then tried to kill them with the skeletal trio, but they were slain by them. Before he could fight them, Rasial teleported in, commenting on how Yudura and his cabal had impressed him with their possession ritual. Yudura repeatedly asked him if he would take him back, but Rasial dodged the question. After a final request by asking him to remove the "dead weight", Rasial agreed, but he immediately killed Yudura, as he had served his purpose. When the adventurer questioned if he would do the same to them, Rasial simply stated that their purpose was coming soon before teleporting away.

The following takes place during Alpha vs Omega.

After honing their skills even further, Rasial met with the adventurer, believing that it was time for their final test. The adventurer declared that the winner would relinquish their undead army, which he agreed to. Rasial was confident that he would win despite the World Guardian's significant progress, since he had thousands of years to study and refine his skills. The adventurer's particular progress—adding souls to their vessel and repopulating Um—meant that he could now in fact launch his invasion of the surface world should he win.[12] Upon arriving at his citadel, Rasial immediately sent Hermod at them, as he did not see their army, but after Hermod was defeated, Rasial was forced to confront them himself.

During the battle, Rasial showcased his accumulated knowledge and power. Despite his efforts, he was ultimately bested by them and his physical form destroyed. He was upset at this, as it would take him a significant amount of time to rebuild it, stating that he was only trying to clean up their mess and was now worried that he would not be able to return in time to "stop the shadows".[13] He asked them how someone who had just begun to learn necromancy could surpass someone with thousands of years in experience and power, learning from them that they did not enslave the undead, but worked with them, causing him to realise that their method was the truest form of necromantic power.[14] He admitted that the apprentices he had taken in the past were selfish and petty, and he had given up hope for a worthy successor. He told them that if they had failed, he would have gone with his plan, as someone needed to protect Gielinor, and he assumed that it meant him. Nonetheless, honouring their agreement, Rasial released the undead in his service and left to rebuild his form, but not before warning the adventurer that they would need their army for the wars to come and to preserve the universe.[15]

Pre-release[edit | edit source]

Rasial was first mentioned as part of the First Necromancer quest series alongside being a boss himself. Extra messages were triggered in-game on 24 July 2023 depending on the result of the player's actions, such as bossing, levelling up, or being in specific areas, leaving some ectoplasmic residue in their bank account.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Rasial is voiced by French-born multilingual actor and voice actor Stéphane Cornicard, making him the first voice actor in RuneScape's cast whose native language is French.
  • Artefacts found on the walls of his citadel imply that Oreb, Taraket, Nomad, and Yudura were either apprentices of his, or he took knowledge from them.
  • Before it was confirmed that Misalionar and Rasial are one and the same, many clues pointed towards Rasial's identity in life having been the druid from the First Age. These clues include:
    • Both were among the first humans to arrive on Gielinor.
    • Both were teachers of Magic.
    • Both were followers of Guthix and strongly connected to runes -- While Misalionar was a Guthixian druid who helped spread runes to the founding people of Gielinor, Rasial was personally appointed by the god as his Guardian of the Runecrafting Altars.
    • Both were murdered.
